ApogeeX: Diverging Global Growth and Policy—What to Watch in FX in the New Year

29-10-2026 16:06

Entering 2020, assessing the dollar's direction requires more than deciding whether the US economy is strong or weak. It also requires comparing policy room and growth developments across major economies. On December 11, 2019, the Federal Reserve kept the federal funds target range at 1.50%–1.75%. US December 2019 CPI, released on January 14, 2020, rose 2.3% year on year, as did core CPI. These figures provide a starting point for assessing rates early in the year, but do not directly indicate what the next meeting will decide. Analysis must distinguish the absolute level of economic data from whether it changes previous policy expectations. Positive inflation, for example, does not automatically support a stronger dollar. If markets had feared accelerating inflation but the actual figures show no further strengthening, interest-rate expectations may remain stable. Meanwhile, policy changes affecting currencies such as the euro and yen also influence dollar pairs.

To monitor markets early in the year, a tracking table can be used to follow US inflation, employment and statements from major central banks. After each release, record changes in the data, the policy assessment and the price response separately, avoiding explanations that attribute every move to a single news item. When comparing countries, use consistent statistical periods and release times.

This edition of ApogeeX Market Watch examines how gaps between expectations and outcomes develop: first establish what the market is waiting for, then assess whether new information is sufficient to change pricing. An annual analytical framework should adapt as data are updated, rather than fix the year's direction at its start.
